Meta gained new competition from Apple in Metaverse

The metaverse is a new computing

The metaverse is a new computing category that some see as the internet’s next frontier. Meta gained new competition from Apple in Metaverse. A Pew Research Center study found that more than half of tech innovators and developers believe the metaverse will be more integrated into people’s daily lives by 2040. While Apple appears to be poised to thrive in the next era of more immersive computing, the company’s distribution control may be stifling the industry.

Apple has a unique opportunity to shape the future of entire industries, and its decisions aren’t always consistent. Among the estimated 30 Metaverse/crypto-based games in its app store are Axie Infinity, Sandbox 3D, and CryptoKitties.

Apples metaverse impact

The iPhone maker sells more smartphones in the United States than anywhere else in the world, and it earns a significant portion of its profits by controlling software on its platforms via its control over APIs, or application programming interfaces, which act as a link between two apps. Apple’s iOS interface applications require Apple’s approval and a fee.

By avoiding complex virtual worlds, the tech behemoth is exerting undue influence over what is and isn’t available. Apple limits what users can do and access in favor of curated experiences, which, given the iPhone’s massive market share, is likely stifling innovation. No one can capture your identity, social graph, data, and virtual assets and then use that to exclude competition.

VR will eventually have a place in the Metaverse, but not for the foreseeable future due to its slow adoption rates. There isn’t much that compares to the sensation of having one’s senses almost completely immersed in a virtual world. Meta is betting big on this technology by introducing Meta accounts, which it claims will make it easier for users to access its Meta Horizons platform via Oculus VR headsets.

The various approaches to the Metaverse for these titans, and seeing how this develops, is very exciting. Apple and Meta are clearly competing in the development of metaverse experiences, and it appears that Meta has the upper hand so far. On SteamVR, Oculus currently holds nearly half of the market share.
